Refresh

Refresh is a social media based app, focused on bringing people positive news, instead of the negative media teenagers and young adults typically consume on TikTok or Instagram. It is proven that individuals suffer from poor mental health in correlation to higher screentime on such apps. On Refresh, people are able to interact with profiles bringing good news to the world, filter their algorithm to their interests, and support local businesses in their e-commerce shops. Refresh is bringing a healthier and new perspective to the way we interact with social media.

ResearchStep OneTo begin, I benchmarked EventBrite and Instagram for reference on design choices, structure, and flow of the app. Additionally, I researched how social media affects teenagers and found that it has been proven that young adults and teenagers have negative mental health in correlation with high screen time, specifically in the age range of 10-19 (https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/social-media-teen-mental-health-a-parents-guide), and “seven in ten Americans suffer from negative news fatigue.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/brand-studio/mikes/the-good-news-effect/)

Personas & Task FlowsStep Two

Information Architecture Step ThreeThe final IA patterns were developed by features such as Nested Doll for the onboarding screens, limiting the user to one screen at a time since this is necessary information to continue; Tabbed View for the home page to navigate to different pages; and Hub & Spoke on profiles to choose from different insights on their page.

Paper PrototypesStep Four

WireframesStep FiveThe process for creating digital wireframes was to create a similar hierarchy and flow to other social media apps to keep the design similar so a user wouldn’t have to learn a new interface.

Style GuideStep SixA sophisticated, yet approachable color scheme was decided on, as well as a bright call to action color to highlight the accesbility of this app, while also remaining up to date on current design trends for the younger audience. The typography and iconography was kept minimal to let the content and structure shine over the many features of this app.

Final PrototypeStep Seven
Overall, the main approach to this app was to highlight the good in the world through an appealing approach to a younger audience. The features are consistent with the idea of making it accessible to do good in the world.
