Great Lakes Science Center’s “Handle with Care”

Handle with Care educates young children on the power of empathy through the process of building a care package. Our goal was to design wayfinding graphics for children to guide them through the exhibit space, highlighting key features and steps along the way.

ResearchStep One
After meeting with Karen, the Exhibit Designer, and sharing three concepts with her, we arrived at a multimedia approach to showcasing wayfinding and signage. This approach allowed for flexibility with stock photography, keeping costs down, while also enabling the showcasing of a diverse range of kids, with inclusivity at the forefront.

Graphic CreationStep TwoEmpathy was at the forefront of this design process, as was diversity. A wide range of kids needed to be represented through the directional graphics because seeing yourself, no matter your gender, race, or religion, is very important at a young age. A mixed media approach was taken, as well as incorporating other design elements to appear childish and kid-friendly.
